"Pairing with Colleagues" program at the ICCH conference in Chicago

Dear colleagues attending the ICCH conference,
We are pleased to invite you to participate in the "Pairing with Colleagues" program at the ICCH conference in Chicago. This program was initiated by tEACH, the Teaching Committee of EACH, at the ICCH meeting in 2007 in Charleston and has continued to be a successful part of the ICCH meetings annually. The purpose of the program is to provide a formal way for junior colleagues to network with more experienced faculty at the meeting. The "Pairing with Colleagues" session allows less experienced colleagues to have an opportunity for dedicated time to discuss their teaching and/or research issues with more experienced persons in the field during the meeting. These sessions will give those with more expertise the opportunity to share their experience and expertise with more junior colleagues.

The time commitment will be as little or as much as you like. The minimal time commitment includes communicating with your matched colleague prior to the Chicago meeting and choosing a time that you will meet for 1 hour during the meeting – the first lunch period at Chicago will have a room set aside specifically for these meetings, as one option. If after meeting you choose to spend more time together or continue corresponding, that is your choice.

At this point, we are seeking anyone who would be willing to share their expertise in communication in healthcare with a less experienced colleague. Though we refer to participants as seniors, this is not meant to reflect age but rather that someone would be comfortable sharing what experience they have had with teaching and/or research in the field of communication and healthcare. If you are willing to participate as a senior colleague, please provide information about yourself at the following link by August 3, 2011.

As a different approach from previous years, we are setting up a website where junior colleagues can view information about senior participants and choose with whom they would like to be matched – this website will be launched August 5. Once each senior has been chosen by the number of juniors they would be willing to meet with (seniors can choose 1-3), they will be removed from the pool of eligible seniors. All participants will be notified at least 2 weeks before the conference about whom they are paired with and provided with contact information.

Many of the same interests; a thoughtful and thought-provoking opportunity for both of us

The senior colleague was very encouraging, validating my skills and experiences and their applicability to future work. The senior colleague also offered concrete suggestions and introduced me to some people at the conference

Getting to know someone who shares many interests with me. Feeling inspired and energized by the other's energy.
